The Science of Smart Dogs

Street value of the Mutt just increased. A new study shows pedigreed dogs are getting dumber. Researchers say that's the result of breeding dogs for looks rather than intelligence.

"You can have lap dogs that are very intelligent. It's just that, if they're just sitting around doing nothing and you breed for many generations without selecting for intelligence, it is possible that their intelligence over time will diminish," he said. "That's what we expect is happening to some breeds."

Rocket science it isn't - and if this trend flips to humans ("never" - is simply beyond our lifetime) it won't even be a remote possibility.

The First Pet - a pound puppy?

Who will be the lucky first dog? The Obamas have their work cut out for them in trying to find a shelter dog. They have reportedly narrowed the search to a breed that rarely ends up in an animal shelter.
Possible contenders at this time are two Goldendoodle rescues from Missouri.

NOTE: In trying to check the site for the Mill Rescue dogs - and http://www.goldendoodles.com/, the virus software removed suspect scripts and a trojan virus.

The doodle lookalike poster dog is from a site that seems to be bug free.

The Skidboot Legacy Lives On -- in Threes

If you have never heard about or seen Skidboot in action, he is an amazing ambassador for the canine world. Here's a cliff note version of his story...

Skidboot died in March of 2007... Now David Hartwig is showing off his trio of Skidboot proteges... and they are a crew to behold. More.

It took some convincing to get Hartwig back out showing off his dogs. His awe of Skidboot is clearly present. But the three youngsters who are carrying on the mantle are certainly more than worthy of that role.

When you read the article you see the hidden message as well. The show wasn't supposed to end with Skidboot... He was just the perfect one to kick it off. And when he got tired and had to move on... he made sure he had a relief crew waiting in the wings.

We are fortunate to have someone like David Hartwig who more than anything else was simply tuned in and paying attention to the everyday wonders in life.

Watch out!! They've got a love drug. This thing sounds serious. It boots the hormones to keep the user focused on a certain other.. Next phase of testing - making cats and dogs fall in love... (love??) Stay tuned.

Say Hey to Weather Cat - And the best walk in cameo by a cat in 2009? (so far)

This little kitty decided to crash a live weather forcast .. the guy didn't miss a beat .. picked up the feline and used a paw to point to the map .. said cats don't like to be ignored and thought that might be the best route to go.

Good call.
