Time
Today’s column marks Animal Insights’ one-year anniversary. As you’re reading this, I’m on a flight back to my beautiful, albeit different, home in the High Country of North Carolina and my dear friends, Hana, Saba & Stormy.
I’d like to thank Wendy Garrett for asking me a year ago to author this weekly column. I just don’t know where the time goes. Here we are; 52 columns later.
Losing my dear friend the day before leaving for Maui made me realize how precious our time here truly is. We have no guarantees. Humans are so focused on linear time; past, present, future. Sadly, many spend their lives concerned more about past and future completely missing their lives that occur in the present.
Animals have no real concept of time, which is a blessing. All they know is Now. Animals remember very little of their past unless it was traumatic. They’ll remember the trauma, but usually not the details. They have no idea what the future is; day, week, month, or year have no meaning for them. It’s only about what’s happening right now!
When I left on vacation I told Hana & Saba where I was going and why. I touched base again when I arrived. I don’t discuss time for I know it has no significance to them. I just told them I’d be away longer than usual. I usually communicate again when I’m starting back.
Last week, I needed some Labrador energy to help process my loss, so I checked-in with them. Both were so happy because they just knew I was starting back; again, no concept of time. I felt bad hearing the confusion in their voices when I told them it was just the halfway point. I loved feeling each of their energies but felt terrible that I’d disappointed them.
Following the animals’ lesson of living in the moment is more important than you realize. Staying present eliminates tons of stress from our lives. I encourage you all to watch your pets and emulate how they live in the present. In doing so, you’ll live healthier, longer lives.
“Live each day as if it were the first day of your Honeymoon or the last day of your Vacation.” Aloha from Maui!
